Am I eligible for Meals on Wheels?
There are no special requirements to start the Meals on Wheels service. Most of our clients live alone or do not have the ability to shop or prepare a meal by conventional means.

How do I apply for Meals on Wheels?
You, a family member, or a caregiver may apply by telephone. Please call our office at 219-756-3663 between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. A trained and considerate individual will take your application over the phone. We will ask you information such as name, address, phone number, emergency contact information and health status, etc.

What kind of meal service do you provide?
We deliver one or two meals five days a week, excluding New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, fourth of July, Labor Day Thanksgiving and Christmas, five days a week to your home.  Depending on your particular needs, there are dietary options available.

How long does it take to get on the meal service?
We can usually start the meal service within two or three days after your application has been completed.

What is the cost?
The cost for the hot lunch meal is $4.25. However, no one is denied service for financial reasons. Please contact our Meals on Wheels office and a representative will be able to provide you with more information.

Who delivers my meal?
More than 846 individuals volunteer their time to deliver your meals to you. You will enjoy getting to know your drivers. In most cases the drivers are individuals who work or live in your community.

It is difficult for me to get to the door. Can the driver bring my meals inside?
Our drivers and volunteers are more than willing to bring your meals into the kitchen, leave them on a table, or put them into your refrigerator. They can also assist you in opening your containers or cutting your food, if needed.

Can I stop and start service without being cancelled from the program?
Yes. You may cancel for appointments or other commitments. To avoid a charge for a missed meal, you must call the office before 10:00 am one day in advance.

Can the drivers leave my meals if I have to go out?
No. Part of our mission is to see each of our clients for each delivery. We want to confirm that you are safe. We want to protect your health and well-being, as well; as a result we will not leave your meal at the door.

Is Meals on Wheels only for a limited time?
You can remain on the program as long as you have a need for home delivered and nutritious meals. Our goal is to ensure our clients remain independent in their homes for as long as the client and family consider appropriate.
